Manta Rays & Sharks
Depending on the season, you may chance upon manta rays, and less often, whales or whale sharks. Reaching a length of 14m (45ft) or more, the whale shark is the world's largest fish. Unlike its more notorious relatives, this shark is a plankton eater and can be seen swimming slowly, often with its mouth agape, straining tiny organisms from the water. Manta rays - huge fish that seem to fly through the water - also feed on plankton. With a wingspan that can exceed 6m (20ft), manta rays are awesome presence when encountered. These giants are not dangerous but curious, and if not harassed, will some times glide over to a group of divers for a closer look before ‘flying off’ in to the deep blue. |
